When redesigning a website, important actions might get overlooked or lost in the complexities of the process. This is why most developers and designers have a website redesign checklist available to make sure they are on track. In order to make sure that you haven’t missed anything, we have put together this article.
However, since we have already covered website redesign checklists before, this time we are going more in depth. There are so many areas that need to be covered throughout the website redesign process that we want to make sure that you aren’t missing anything along the way.
Before we begin, let’s review the major points that make up the foundation of a website redesign checklist.
Website redesign checklist review
For any successful website redesign, your job will to be to answer the following two questions.
- Why and what do you need to redesign?
- What are your goals with the redesign?
The next steps in the process are based off of how you answer these questions. They are as follows.
- Analyze important metrics: Studying some important metrics will give you objective insights into how your website is performing.
- Set goals for your website redesign: Measurable results can give you an image of whether your redesign is meeting your goal standards or not.
- Know about your users: The first thing you should keep in mind is your user and after that the rest will fall into place.
Once you have answered the basic two questions and taken the previous three steps, the foundation for your website redesign will be set and now you are ready to strap in, get your hands dirty, and start reworking and redesigning your website.
Design
With the groundwork of your website redesign checklist laid, it’s time to look at your site’s design. This step can often be a source of confusion, overthinking, and extra man-hours. In reality, this process is fairly simple. Here are a few ways to keep it efficient and still hit your design goals.
- Layout: Review the wireframes of your new layout with your team and make any necessary revisions. Limit changes to 2-3 revisions at most.
- Mockups: Use your wireframes to develop the mockup for the site. Base your design decisions off of your set goals and keep the user experience in mind throughout.
- Colors: Make sure the pallet you choose matches past marketing materials or future brand ideas. Having a consistent pallet and look across all channels is important to your overall brand look.
- Visuals: Consider the imagery you want on your site and spend some time going through images online that meet your ideas.
The important part of this step is to not go down the design rabbit hole. Too many people get stuck at this part of the website redesign checklist and never move forward. Limit yourself to a set number of revisions (3 is recommended) and don’t tie yourself down.

Build it up, built it out
The length of time it takes to build out your website can vary widely, depending on the scope of the project. This is one reason why we recommend WordPress for website redesigns. However, if you are building out your website yourself, keep the following steps in mind.
- Decide which platforms works best and what timeframe they can work within.
- Finalize all of the content and visuals for your site.
- Make sure the staging and development site are set to non-index so search engines won’t crawl your site while you are making revisions.
- As the site is being built, make continuous changes and revisions. Consider making a specific website redesign checklist for this portion to ensure you are keeping user experience in mind.
Optimize everything
Now that you have built out your site, it’s time to go through and make revisions to ensure that everything is optimized. While there are plenty of things to say about this step, we don’t have enough space to cover it all here. But, before publishing your site, ask yourself the following questions about optimization.
- Is the page hierarchy clear?
- Are the calls to action obvious and move the visitor further down the sales funnel?
- What elements of the site are hindering it? Which are helping it?
- Are sharing features like social tools easy to see and subscribe to?
- Is your website running as fast as possible?
- Do all of your links work?
You should continue asking yourself these questions right up until you publish the site and then again every few weeks. Staying on top of optimizing your website is the best way to get more traffic and leads.

Ready to launch
The final piece of the website redesign checklist is launching your website out to the world. This can be nerve-wracking as all of your hard work is about to be in the hands of your users. It can also be incredible rewarding.
As you prepare for launch, be sure to review everything up until this point to make sure you haven’t missed anything important. Once you have double or triple checked everything, start spreading the news. Whether it is via email, social media, PR, partner blogs, or any other avenue you can think of, start telling people about your new and improved site.
As visitors pour into your redesigned site, you only have one thing left to do.
Analyze
At the beginning of the website redesign checklist, we talked about setting benchmarks. These are designed so that once your new site is launched, you can measure it against your old site to see how it has improved. Be sure to actually do this!
You would be surprised how many developers forget to actually use the benchmarks they spent time putting in place. Sometimes the excitement of the new site can make you lose focus, but analyzing your results will confirm the redesign was worth it.
The rest of the process simply involves continuing to analyze the important metrics you have laid out and to make small changes as needed. Think you’re ready to redesign your website now? Go out there and get to it!
