In this day and age, mobile app design has become a must for companies who hope to have a relevant iPhone or Android app. Designing an app that not only provides value, but looks and works the way it should is no easy task.
There are many companies out there that are trying to be the leaders when it comes to design, but they often suffer from lack of value surrounding the purpose of their app. Others have a sound idea behind what they are doing, but have not yet figured out how to make it work well.
All flash and no substance can be just as dangerous as substance without good design. In this article, we are going to take a look at some of the apps out there that have struck the right chord between having good user interface design, user experience design, and added value to their customers. Let’s get started!
Trello
Trello is a project management and organization tool that works primarily off what they call “boards.” Each of these boards can correspond to different tasks or responsibilities that need to be completed. The simple and obvious design allows work to be done faster and with less communicative errors between parties.
Trello is a good example of UX design, in that it doesn’t have a lot of unnecessary features. Everything on the home screen of the app is easy to understand and works exactly the way it should, without allowing any confusion over how to move tasks from one board to another. The interface design is intuitive and those using the app for the first time have no trouble navigating the different pages.
If your business venture needs a free, easy way to manage tasks, Trello is the only choice.
Slack
Slack is a communication tool for teams of all shapes and sizes. Whether you are planning an event, working on a project, or are just tired of email, Slack is becoming one of the most widely used tools for messaging amongst professionals. A key reason for this success is their simple and powerful design.
While Slack is not exclusively a mobile app, the user experience doesn’t lack whether you use Slack on a mobile device or a computer. Everything you need is very clearly put together on the left drop down menu, while the team feed is always updating in the main area of the app.
The reason people use Slack is because it is so easily maneuverable and easy to pick up and use. That is why it has made our list!
YouTube
YouTube, the largest video sharing website in the world, has benefitted from their smart design since their founding in 2005. This same inspiration has carried through to today and can be seen in the ease of use in the mobile app for their service.
Again, while YouTube is not exclusively a mobile app, more than half of all views on YouTube videos are done from mobile devices. The necessity of such an app in 2017 is so apparent that for a few years Apple made it impossible to delete the YouTube app.
Even with all of this in their favor, YouTube still does a good job of keeping their design accessible and fresh, updating their app every couple of weeks, and adapting the design to the changes they make to the platform. The fact that most users prefer the mobile version to the actual website is why their app has made our list.
Duolingo
Duolingo is a language learning company that teaches users how to speak different languages through mini-games and short lessons. Founded in 2009, they have reached over 100 million users and show no signs of stopping, primarily due to how simple their app is to use and how innovative the technology is.
Anyone who has used Duolingo understands the simplicity of the app. By completing one task or game, you can move on to more advanced categories. Combining the addictiveness of a mobile gaming app and using it to teach the world new languages is simply a brilliant idea, but the fantastic user experience is what keeps people coming back again and again.
Airbnb
Airbnb is an online marketplace and hospitality service, enabling people to lease or rent short-term lodging including vacation rentals, apartment rentals, home stays, hostel beds, or hotel rooms. They have a world-wide presence, working in 191 countries, and have recently been completely overhauling their image as the way to travel in this day and age.
With their recently added ability to book a room instantly, having a clean-cut mobile presence has become a necessity for Airbnb. Similar to their innovative website, their mobile app is uncomplicated, smooth, and straightforward. The user simply puts in where they want to stay, what dates, and how many guests they will have and they immediately have a selection of dozens of homes meeting their needs right at their fingertips.
The effortless navigation of something as complicated as booking a room in a foreign country is why their mobile app has made our list.
Spotify
Spotify is a music streaming service, officially launched on October 7, 2008, which has now reached over 100 million monthly active users and as of March 2017 has 50 million paying subscribers. Spotify has made a name for themselves as one of the leading music streaming services and continues to innovate with both their design and their marketing strategies every year.
Similar to YouTube, 52% of Spotify’s users listen to music on the go, whether that is on a mobile phone or a tablet. Leaning into this shift from computer to mobile, Spotify has designed a simplistic app that doesn’t lack any of the features found on the desktop version. Users can create playlists, queue up their favorite songs, and see what their friends are listening to all through the mobile app.
Apple Music and Tidal both have tried to keep up with Spotify, but they continue to lead the way in both innovation and design when it comes to music streaming apps, which is why we have included them on our list.
Tastemade
Tastemade, Inc. a video network that offers food and travel related programming for online audiences. Founded in 2012, Tastemade is changing the way people talk and share their food. From videos on different recipes to reviews of local dining, the Tastemade mobile app makes everything even easier to share with your friends.
The design of the app itself is well thought-out and gets right down to exactly what you want out of the app. Videos are easy to view and reviews take minutes to make. The social feature allows others to view the videos you make and recommend new spots.
While people have loved to share what they are eating since the inception of social media, they have never been able to do so the way they are now, all thanks to Tastemade.
Marline
Marline is a weather app that also tracks the changing of the tides and moon. Created by Javi Perez, the look and feel of this app just makes sense. It’s clean, there is only what you want on each screen, and it provides you with the information that you need.
Marline has been recognized multiple times for its brilliant design and has become an aesthetically pleasing alternative to the standard weather app, landing it on our list in the process.
Tinder
Tinder is the dating app that has revolutionized the way people meet each other. Launched in 2012, the app reached one billion “swipes” per day by 2014. By “swipes,” we mean the design of the app and how it works: when you see a picture of someone you like, you swipe right if the person interests you and you swipe left if they don’t. If both of the users swipe right, they “match” and are able to begin a conversation.
This simple user experience is the reason why Tinder has become as popular as it has. Swiping left and right has become a running joke in popular culture and the Tinder brand has become far more common than older dating sites like eHarmony and Match.com. Tinder also works through location, restricting users to a 100-mile radius from where they are in order to find potential matches. However, if you pay extra for the app, you can create the radius around where you would like to go.
Dating has forever been changed by companies like Tinder, but the reason for their success comes down to the simplicity of their design, and thus, they have made our list.
